International Women's Day - Zonic Group

International Women's Day

Why it's Important

International Women's Day (March 8th) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call for action accelerating women's equality.
We asked our team "Why is #IWD important to you" Here's what they said...

“I think it is so important not to whitewash history, because humans are built on yesterday’s mistakes and achievements. International Women’s Day is a poignant part of our collective history and future - it is so important to celebrate how far women have evolved but also continue to highlight the paths women are yet to conquer. In 2020 International Women’s Day we’re celebrating #EachForEqual to demolish the false belief that one gender has more worth than the other which in the past, and to this day, has shackled women’s possibilities - particularly in sectors like tech which is still perceived as a male sector. Equality encompasses the right to a good quality of life - to be secure, happy and healthy. Every person should be able to wake up and go to work knowing that their progression and wellbeing is not limited by a ceiling of out-dated gender roles. This is why we celebrate International Women’s Day, so that women can explore and define who they are as an individual and not as a man’s binary opposite.”
Claire Dukes - PR Executive

“In my role at Zonic group and having worked in tech PR for over 20 years I see a steady rise in women making a massive contribution to the tech industry while juggling demanding family lives and multitasking on many levels with ease. This is not to be underestimated. Women have so much to offer and I see a future where women will take on more leadership roles in tech and the balance will tip so it is far less dominated by men.  International Women’s Day is so important in celebrating women’s achievements today and for the future. We have so much to give!”
Hannah Whitrow - Account Director

“International Women's Day is still so important today. Sadly, feminism has developed a negative connotation in the last few years. Partly, because mainstream publications are more and more willing to use shock tactics to distract the gullible, this has encouraged readers to forget about the real plight of the feminist movement. Feminism is about equality. Equality for women AND men. We need international women’s day as well as feminism to bring awareness to issues women specifically are facing every day worldwide. Figures show globally, women’s education, health, and violence towards women are still worse than that of men. We need #IWD to remind us of these issues, but also to allow us to remember how far things have come.”
Laura Fleming - Digital Marketing Manager

In terms of visibility, opportunity and equal pay for women worldwide there is still a long way to go, but campaigns such as International Women's Day still play a huge role in keeping the debate alive and issues at the front and center. Which is why we need to campaign the opportunity to have our voices heard.
